Immunizations can prevent 40,000 elderly deaths from flu and pneumonia each year, as well as 200,000 hospitalizations costing over $3 billion.  National prevention goals to dramatically increase immunization levels in the elderly include initiatives for the Hispanic and African-American communities, where the elderly are not vaccinated as frequently as whites.  This Web conference describes how local community organizations are involving churches, physicians and pharmacists, senior centers and nursing homes to encourage minority seniors to get flu and pneumonia shots.  Sponsored by the National Black Caucus of State Legislators, the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators and the Council of State Governments, this Web conference is part of a series on state responses to public health issues, including smoking, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, oral health and cancer.

Speakers included:

  • Senator Leticia Van de Putte, R. Ph., Texas
  • Tamara J. Kicera, Immunization Services Division, Center for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Dr. Julie Morita, Chicago Department of Health, Illinois
  • Christine Long, M.P.H., Center for Rochester's Health, New York
